Chemical Peels

We use several types of chemical peels.

Skinceuticals Acid Gel Peel

Combined Salicylic and Mandelic acid work synergistically to exfoliate the skin while decongesting open pores and reducing irritation. Although one of the strongest Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Mandelic acid's large molecular structure and even penetration help prevent inflammation and irritation that can sometimes occur with AHA use. Salicylic acid is a lipid soluble Beta-Hydroxy Acid that penetrates pores to dissolve sebum and cellular debris. This peel exfoliates the skin without irritating, improves collagen synthesis, remodels existing collagen, improves elastin fibres in the dermis and encourages cell renewal. It also improves the appearance of skin discolourations by dispersing melanin granules more evenly in epidermis.

The peel is appropriate for serial applications and as a companion treatment for microdermabrasion, IPL or laser treatment.

Light chemical peels have the benefit of not causing the client any down time and irritation. They can achieve the same results as a stronger peel, but will have to be applied in series. Depending on the condition to be treated and skin type, weekly applications are recommended. A series of six to eight peels can achieve significant skin improvement.

Vitalise Peel

Indicated for mild to moderate skin conditions, such as photo-damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles, acne and superficial acne scarring. It gently sloughs away the outer most layers of the skin to reveal a smoother younger looking skin.

Post peel

  • You may notice a mild stinging sensation as the peel activates. Your skin maybe a light yellow, this is temporary.
  • The area must be well protected and hydrated regularly with moisturisers. The face can be washed with gentle cleansing milk 6 hours after the peel has been applied.
  • Your skin may take on a sunburned appearance.
  • After 48 hours the skin will become flaky and light to moderate peeling and redness will occur. This may continue for another 3-4 days.
  • Continue using a gentle cleansing milk/cream or just water and pat dry (don’t rub).
  • Do not pick or disturb any dry peeling skin. Use a strong spf daily and avoid any other facial treatments for 10-14 days.
  • Results can last for up to 3-4 months but periodic treatments maybe necessary to maintain the results.
  • You may resume your normal skin care regime after the effects of the peel have worn off. We recommend about a week after the peel has been applied at the clinic.

SkinMedica Vitalize & Rejuvenize Peels

Question: What is the difference between the SkinMedica Vitalize and Rejuvenize Peels?

Answer: The Rejuvenize and Vitalize Peels are very similar in composition. The Rejuvenize Peel is deeper and is recommended for more severe skin conditions. Main ingredients of both peels include; Salicylic acid (peeling agent), lactic acid (peeling agent), Resorcinol (peeling agent) Retinoic acid (peeling agent), Panthenol (anti-irritant) & Isoceteth-20 (penetration enhancer). Acid concentrations are 70% higher in the Rejuvenize peel than the Vitalise peel.

Question: Who can benefit from the Vitalize/Rejuvenize Peels?

Answer: Indications for both peels include photo-damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentary abnormalities, superficial scarring and acne. Upper epidermal defects, such as, melasma can also be improved. Rejuvenize peel indicated for moderate to severe skin conditions.

Question: What is the mechanism of skin rejuvenation from a Chemical Peel?

Answer: Chemical peels produce a partial thickness injury to the skin, the depth of which is determined by the chemical agents. Following the trauma to the skin, the wound healing process reorients the new skin connective tissue. Collagen re-modeling is the main reason chemical peels decrease sun damage and reduce wrinkles. Dermal regeneration can take weeks to months. The epidermis, however, heals in a few days giving the skin an improved appearance, more even skin colour, smoother texture and a healthier glow.

Question: How long will the effects of the chemical peel last?

Answer: Ageing of the skin is a chronic natural phenomenon. A single peel can reverse some of the clinical and histological signs of aging, but once the skin has healed from the peel, the ageing process starts again. Therefore, a daily program of specifically designed products that reverse the signs of aging is necessary to maintain long-term improvement.

Question: What can be expected after the Vitalize/Rejuvenize Peel?

Answer: Most patients leave the clinic looking healthy and fresh. Any redness or discoloration can easily be covered with makeup and most activities can be resumed right away. Within 48 hours a mild flaking will occur, and peeling will continue for 2-3 days following the Vitalize peel and 3-5 days following the Rejuvenize peel. The Rejuvenize peel is stronger with potentially more redness & heat, and more downtime expected.

Question: Is it safe to have these Peels on a regular basis?

Answer: Yes. Generally multiple treatments are required to achieve desired results. Subsequent peels may be repeated every 3 to 4 weeks or with stronger peels 4 to 6 weeks. There is no limit to the number of peels a person can receive as long as improvement continues. The effect is cumulative with time.

Question: What makes the SkinMedica Vitalize/Rejuvenize Peels helpful in management of acne?

Answer: One of the active ingredients in these peels is salicylic acid, which has been used for several decades to treat acne. Salicylic acid is a comedolytic agent. This agent is lipid soluble and therefore penetrates through the sebum of acne-prone skin better than water-soluble acids. Also, salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties since it is related to aspirin. In addition, Retinoic acid inhibits sebum production and reduces hyper-keratinisation. It helps to unclog the pores and prevent the formation of new papules.

Question: How long after receiving a peel can one be exposed to the sun?

Answer: Sun avoidance during the recovery period is critical. After the peeling is complete, one can resume regular activities, but daily use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 +) is imperative for maintaining healthy skin.

Question: What results should I expect?

Answer: Realistic expectations are: Corrects/improves sun damaged skin, smoothes & reduces fine lines/wrinkles, reduces mild scarring, improves regular discoloration, smoothes rough texture, and improves acne conditions.

Unrealistic expectations include: Cannot remove or reduce broken blood vessels, cannot improve deep wrinkles. It is also impossible to truly change pore diameter, however, after the procedure, the pores appear less pronounced. This is not a procedure to remove atrophic or hypertrophic scars.

Costs per peel for Vitalise - £100. Course of 4 - £350
Costs per peel for Rejuvenize - £145. Course of 4 - £500

Glycolic Acid

What is Glycolic Acid?
Glycolic Acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid naturally occurring in sugar cane. It penetrates the skin and loosens thickened surface layers that appear as dry, rough, scaling skin.

As the uppermost layers are sloughed away, skin with a smoother texture and *healthier appearance is revealed.

  • GLY DERM® is a skin care program that uses glycolic acid to improve skin tone, as well as to smooth fine wrinkles and diminish skin discoloration and blemishes. It has been known for years that glycolic acid can improve skin wrinkling, dryness, roughness, flaking, scaling, and elasticity. However, most people find plain glycolic acid, particularly at higher concentrations, to be very irritating when applied to skin.
  • GLY DERM® glycolic acid is esterified, a process that combines glycolic acid with fruit alcohols. This produces gentle esters which maintain their full strength but are much less irritating to skin.
  • GLY DERM® is a supervised skin peel program. It combines esterified glycolic acid applications in your specialist skin clinic with an at-home skin care routine. Your practitioner determines the strength that's right for your in-clinic applications which can continue regularly until the desired result is achieved.
